Healthy People, Healthy Planet

For Maine. For the Nation. For the Planet.

Planetary Health is an interdisciplinary field that explores how to create a livable future for humanity and all life on Earth amid rapid planetary changes driven by human disruptions to natural systems. Public Health is defined as the science of protecting and improving the health of people and their communities.

From the disruptions of COVID-19 to the accelerating impacts of climate change, recent events have underscored the interdependence of human and planetary well-being. A new, collaborative approach is needed to better address the challenges of both public and planetary health. The University of New England’s School of Public and Planetary Health (SPPH) — the first of its kind in northern New England — is our bold response. More than a new academic home, SPPH represents a transformational commitment to research, education, practice, and convening to meet the defining challenge of our time.

“We are living at a time when institutions of higher education are being asked to do more than confer degrees. We are being asked to serve, to lead, to respond to the needs of our communities, our climate, and our shared future. The School of Public and Planetary Health is our answer to that call.”
