Our community-based education model blends service learning and public health coursework with extensive real-world clinical experience. Within our group practice model, you’ll collaborate with peers at various stages of training, developing leadership skills while delivering high-quality care. In your fourth year, you’ll complete rotations across Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont, practicing general dentistry under expert supervision. By graduation, you’ll be well-prepared to manage a successful dental practice, equipped with the knowledge and experience to thrive in the field.

Start mastering the critical skills needed for advanced dental practice. In your first weeks, you’ll begin working in our simulation center to refine your hand skills with your own set of instruments.

Refine Your Hand Skills Early

Treat Real Patients Early

Begin working with patients in our Oral Health Center early in your training, gaining invaluable experience while serving a diverse community of more than 17,000 patients annually.

Starting in the first semester of your second year, you’ll gain invaluable hands-on experience working alongside fellow “dental associates” in UNE’s Oral Health Center. Under the guidance of experienced faculty mentors, you’ll refine your skills while managing patient cases and providing high-quality oral health care to Maine communities. With no fellows or residents, you’ll take on full responsibility for patient care, handling a wide variety of cases, from routine check-ups to more complex treatments. This model ensures you develop the confidence and clinical skills needed to succeed in your dental career.

Group Practice Model: Clinical Expertise with Mentorship

Externship Experience: Developing Skills and Impacting Communities

In your fourth year, you’ll complete a 12-week externship at a community site in Maine, Northern New England, or Massachusetts, with a focus on serving underserved populations. This unique opportunity allows you to apply your clinical skills in a real-world environment while expanding your professional network and making a meaningful impact on the community.

In 2017, the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) granted the University of New England College of Dental Medicine D.M.D. program the accreditation status of “approval without reporting requirements.”
